We invite you to take part in 15-th Konstantine readings

which will be held on October 25, 2017

in the Konstantinovsky Palace in Strelna.

Conference subject: "The life given to service of Russia"

To the 190 anniversary from the birthday of the great Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich.

In 2017 marks 190 years since the birth of the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, the owner of the Palace and Park ensemble in Strelna, and 150 years from the day of the wedding of Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna and the Greek king George I.

In the era of the great reforms of the mid-nineteenth century the name of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich (1827-1892) was known not only in Russia but throughout the world, it has become a symbol of progress and patriotism. The public activity of the Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich significantly influenced the course of world history in the latter half of the nineteenth century — he undertook major administrative and state reforms in Russia.

Since 1860, being Chairman of the Main Committee on the peasant business, he made a great contribution to the preparation and holding of the peasant reform. The Grand Duke was the first Chairman of the Russian geographical society, Chairman of the Russian archaeological society, the Russian musical society and many other civic and charitable organizations.

His second daughter, Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna (1851-1926) in 1867 married king George I of the Hellenes (1845 – 1913). The marriage strengthened the diplomatic relations of Greece and Russia and pulled together two reigning houses — that was one of the successes of Russian diplomacy. The strengthening of Russian positions in Mediterranean area, in anticipation of the threat of military conflict with Turkey was extremely important. Olga Konstantinovna, "the Queen of all Hellenes" and a Russian Grand Duchess, made a huge contribution to the development of science, culture and charity in Greece. Since 1914 she lived in Russia and Greece. In 1918, Olga moved to Switzerland, lived in France, UK and Italy, died in Rome in 1926 and in 1936 the remains of the Queen were transferred to Tata near Athens. On April 29, 2011 in London there was a wedding of the grandson of the British Queen, the great-grandson of Grand Duchess Olga Konstantinovna, Prince William, with his fiancé. Thus, the present descendants of the English crown are also descendants of Grand Duke Konstantine Nikolayevich.

The organizers of the 15-th Konstantine readings hope that these and other topics related to the life and work of Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolaevich, will be interested to researchers, and invite everyone to take part in the scientific-practical conference as authors, speakers and listeners.
